Reflecting new thinking about conservation in Southeast Asia, Beyond the Sacred Forest is the product of a unique collaboration involving ethnographic research in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Scholars from those countries and the United States rethink the translation of environmental concepts between East and West, particularly ideas of nature and culture; what conservation might mean; and how conservation policy is applied and transformed in the everyday landscapes of Southeast Asia. As this collection of essays demonstrates, the researchers focus more on folk, community, and vernacular conservation discourses than on those of institutions and the state. Thick with ethnographic detail, their essays provide powerful examples of why social, political, historical, and economic factors are central to the success or failure of conservation initiatives. Natural resource managers and policy makers who accept and work with these factors are likely to enjoy greater and more enduring success than those who simply seek to remove the influence and impact of humans from the landscape. As many of the essays suggest, this requires the ability to manage contradictions, to relinquish orthodox ideas of what conservation looks like, and to practice continuously adaptive management techniques. It requires practitioners who are deeply reflexive and able to focus less on short-term goals and more on long-term engagement with the relationships between people and nature. The first edition of |Extreme Programming Explained| is a classic. It won awards for its then-radical ideas for improving small-team development, such as having developers write automated tests for their own code and having the whole team plan weekly. Much has changed in five years. This completely rewritten second edition expands the scope of XP to teams of any size by suggesting a program of continuous improvement based on: five core values consistent with excellence in software development; eleven principles for putting those values into action; and, thirteen primary and eleven corollary practices to help you push development past its current business and technical limitations. Whether you have a small team that is already closely aligned with your customers or a large team in a gigantic or multinational organization, you will find in these pages a wealth of ideas to challenge, inspire, and encourage you and your team members to substantially improve your software development.

|Econometrics textbooks see their subject as a set of techniques; Magnus and Morgan see it as a set of practices. A combination of controlled experiment and anthropology of science, Methodology and Tacit Knowledge gives a rare inside view of how econometricians work, why econometrics is an art and not a set of simple recipes, and why, like all artists, econometricians differ in their techniques and finished works. This is economic methodology at its best.| Kevin Hoover, University of California, Davis |The tacit knowledge experiment was a highly commendable initiative. Its exploration of the theme of how knowledge is acquired and used in applied econometrics is unique and produced some fascinating insights into this process.| Adrian Pagan, Australian National University |It is rare, perhaps unique, to find leading empirical economists face the prospect of modelling the same phenomena, with the same data within the same limited time frame. A valuable and illuminating experiment in comparative research methodologies, made all the more provocative when compared to the excellent original study by Tobin.| Richard Blundell, University College London This book will be of considerable interest to economists and to econometricians concerned about the methodology of their own discipline, and will provide valuable material for researchers in science studies and for teachers of econometrics.

Evaluating Military Advertising and Recruiting PDF Download. It is anticipated that in the coming decade the Department of Defense (DoD) will field and test new advertising and recruiting initiatives designed to improve the recruiting outlook. The DoD needs a comprehensive research and evaluation strategy based on sound research principles that will ensure valid, reliable, and relevant results to discover the most promising policies. The primary objective of this book is to help the DoD improve its research on advertising and recruiting policies. Evaluating Military Advertising and Recruiting: Theory and Methodology presents a framework for evaluation that links different types of research questions to various research methodologies. The framework identifies four major categories of research questions and four broad methodological approaches. The first category of research question asks “What does a target audience see as attractive or unattractive features of a program?” It is well suited to examination via qualitative methods, such as focus groups, unstructured or open-ended surveys, and interviews. The second category of research question asks “What is the effect of a program on specified attitudes or behavioral intentions?” It is well suited to examination via surveys, experiments, and quasi experiments. The third category of research question asks “What is the effect of a proposed new program on enlistment?” It is well suited to examination via experiments and quasi experiments. The final category of research question asks “What is the effect of an existing program on enlistment?” It is well suited to examination via econometric modeling.
